The Velvet Teen were band that I seemed to have an on-again-off-again love of. First introduced to them shortly after I had moved to Nashville, TN in 2004, they seemed to slip in and out of my radar until disappearing almost completely for some time. A few months into my relationship with my current girlfriend, she started playing Cum Laude every so often. That was an album that never fully took for me, but I did enjoy some songs off of it. The band recently supported Minus The Bear on their 10th Anniversary tour and I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had an EP of new material. The Velvet Teen sounded really great that night and so I decided to splurge on the purchase of No Star. It’s a solid effort… a bit more straightforward than past releases but it’s just too damn short. All four songs are hooky guitar driven indie rock that come across as very listenable with the tempo slowing just a bit for the final number. I’d like to hear what seems like a bit of a new direction for the band and have it afforded the chance to stretch out and breathe a bit. At any rate it’s a nice tease for what’s perhaps ahead and where the band may be headed on the next release. ‘something about the color scheme and simplicity of the cover design really struck me as well. The band takes a stab at some iconography that somewhat succeeds although not necessarily completely. Nice to see this on white vinyl. Here’s hoping for more new music that uses this EP as a jumping point, but takes it to the next level.
